The shea parkland
of Niger covers only a small area of the country, along the eastern
bank of the Niger River, and around Maradi. Parklands observed
in Dosso region are beautiful and highly productive, but there
is no observable regeneration in the form of young trees. Without
attention to regeneration of the resource, the shea tree is very
likely to become more or less extinct in Niger over the next 50
years.
Fortunately, despite the limited range of the shea tree in Niger,
interest in the resource is building, both at the national level
and among local institutions in the producer areas.
Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique du Niger (INRAN)
INRAN has facilitated an excellent initial inventory study
of the shea resource in southeastern Niger by a student at the
Université de Cocody (Ivory Coast), in collaboration
withthe Université Abdou Moumouni, Niaméy, and the
department of forest research, including basic mapping of the
Vitellaria parkland across southeastern Niger. In the course of
this study, INRAN has also undertaken basic socio-economic studies
in the various production zones. This preparatory work on the
resource aspects of shea in Niger will provide a sound basis for
planning project activities in Niger. INRAN is acutely aware of
the sensitive status of the shea parkland in Niger, particularly
its lack of regeneration, and is highly appreciative of the potential
of the project to reinforce the sustainable management of the
tree through increased returns to producers.

NGOs
Non-governmental organizations currently working with shea in
Niger include the Plate Forme Paysanne (PFP-Niger) and GAYIA,
both of which are operating in the Dosso region, particularly
at Gaya. Recently, CECI has taken an interest in the shea resource,
and has initiated contact with M. Cheibou, the District Environmental
Officer of Gaya, in this regard.
